The UK Gambling Commission executed raids on venues in Sheffield and Doncaster on August 5, resulting in three arrests. The operation targeted illegal betting terminals and suspected money laundering activities.
Officers supported by South Yorkshire Police carried out warrants under Operation Duxford and Operation Snaresbrook. The teams discovered sixteen unlicensed betting terminals and seized assets including gold and over £110,000 in cash. The Yorkshire & Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit and Immigration Enforcement assisted in the coordinated effort.
Enforcement Strategy and Funding
The regulator announced a £26 million funding allocation over the next three years to increase enforcement against unlicensed gambling. Sue Young, Executive Director of Operations at the Gambling Commission, stated that unlicensed operators often link to wider criminal activity and exploit vulnerable individuals. The commission aims to shut down illegal operations in partnership with police.
The regulator is part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s new Illegal Gambling Taskforce, chaired by Minister Baroness Fiona Twycross. Inspector Amy Mellor of South Yorkshire Police noted that the operation targets the trade of illegal gambling which funds organized crime.
These recent actions follow a raid on a suspected gambling den in Manchester in June. The commission also participated in an operation against an alleged illegal casino in Bristol last month.
